The Space is a conference venue in Norwich offering a range of small, medium and large rooms in an environment designed to host and deliver effective events. We are a social enterprise and are committed to minimising the impact of our activities on the environment and we encourage our staff, suppliers, visitors and other stakeholders to do the same.

Our most recent carbon footprint (for our emissions of natural gas, electricity and business owned vehicle mileage) is for 2015/16 and has been calculated to be 110.9 tonnes of CO2e. We are hoping to reduce this by 5% over the next 2 years (by implementing the actions outlined in our Environmental Action Plan).

In order to minimise our environmental impact we have already undertaken several actions, which include:
  • Undertaking an Energy Review process in order to identify areas for improvement and to calculate an annual emissions statement
  • Ensuring that staff are aware of the need to switch off lights and equipment around the venue when rooms are not in use
  • Implementing a shut-down procedure for ensuring that lights and equipment are not left on unnecessarily when the building is unoccupied
  • Waste generated at the venue is segregated for recycling, and bins for use by staff and visitors are segregated and labelled for recyclable and non-recyclable waste
  • The Space has committed to support the Buy Local Norfolk network of local businesses, thereby reducing transport related environmental impacts and supporting the local economy
  • The Space encourages its staff and visitors to use public transport and to car share, thereby reducing transport related environmental impacts
  • Paper brochures for the venue are no longer produced and all relevant information is now available via our website
  • Refillable bottles are used whenever possible in place of disposable bottles
Through the implementation of this environmental policy and the associated environmental action plan, we hope to continually reduce our environmental impact. To achieve this we aim to:
  • Comply with all relevant regulatory requirements and environmental legislation
  • Measure and monitor our environmental performance
  • Continue to identify ways in which we can reduce the amount of energy we consume and our wider environmental impact
